Lesson 7: Job Opening Search

Activity: Locating Job Openings on the Web

Key Considerations

There are a variety of methods you can use to explore and locate job openings. Your resources for locating openings include (but are not limited to) your local newspaper and spreading the word of your job hunt to your personal network of friends, family members, and teachers. “Pounding the pavement” and visiting all of the potential places you would like to work is also a proven way to land a job. Explore your options for finding job leads in the Job Seeker’s Toolkit. Read Section 5- Finding Job Leads in Module 3- Finding Employment and explore some of the traditional ways of finding or creating job leads.

Now more than ever, traditional job search methods have expanded to include searching employment websites. There are many benefits to online searching which include being able to search for jobs anytime of the day. However, if this is the first time you have searched for your own job using the web, you will quickly learn it can be time consuming. If you approach this task in an organized manner, your job hunt can be productive and will hopefully lead you to achieve your goal of getting hired.

Directions

Use an employment website to search for job openings for five jobs you identified you would be a good candidate for. As you search, take note of the job posting date. If a job was posted four months ago, more than likely it was filled and you may not want to spend time completing an application.

Many job opportunities you locate online will have an option for you to proceed with completing an online job application. Therefore, before you begin your web-based job search, decide if you will apply for jobs as you identify openings or if you will make a list of openings and then apply at a later date. If you are not able to access specific online job applications, you will need to schedule a time to have someone in your network assist you. If someone assists you, remember this is your job search and you need to be prepared to provide the necessary information required in the application by referencing your personal data sheet.
